Play to Traffic Engine Strengths

The online advertising industry climbed out of last year’s recession in the fourth quarter. New data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PriceWaterhouseCoopers shows that online advertising revenues in the U.S. climbed 2.6 percent annually in the fourth quarter to $6.3 billion, and were up 13.8 percent from the previous quarter. These U.S.-only numbers compare to 10.2 percent annual worldwide growth last quarter in Internet advertising revenues for the four largest Web companies. Industry revenues for the year as a whole were down 3.4 percent to $22.7 billion. It was the first year of declining revenues since 2001.

Here’s how that $22.7 billion broke down by advertising category:

Search: $10.7 billion (47 percent)
Display: $8 billion (35 percent)
Classifieds: $2.3 billion (10 percent)
Lead Generation: $1.5 billion (6 percent)
Email marketing: $292 million (1 percent)

Search and Display revenues both managed to grow for the year, up 1 percent and 4 percent, respectively. The other categories were all down between 14 and 29 percent.

Some of the surprising relative strength of Display advertising came from video ads, which reached $1 billion and accounted for 4 percent of the total. In the fourth quarter, video ads made up 5 percent of the pie.

Our tech is getting noticed!

Members of the Traffic Engine executive team assembled at our corporate offices for the filming of a upcoming episode of Inside Business Report. While aimed at a broader television audience, we got into some pretty techy details about how we can help companies benefit from search engine marketing, and online advertising in general. Our SMarT platform was the center of the show, featured in the technology segment of IBR.

Raising Our Profile
We’ve seen some big increases of our media exposure in 2009 and through 2010, and the television airtime delivered by Inside Business Report is the latest development in this trend. While we’ve traditionally enjoyed our “best kept secret” status for industry insiders, all this media attention has been gratifying as well! Keep your eyes open for more Traffic Engine media exposure throughout the year.

About Inside Business Report
Inside Business Report is a 5 minute news segment that plays several times a day on television networks such as Discovery Channel, CNN Headline News, and other regional and local news shows. It’s hosted by actor and former presidential candidate Fred Thompson and has won numerous awards, including 9 recent Telly Awards.

AIRDATES!
In the greater Seattle-Tacoma area? Watch our Inside Business Report on 5/15, on CNN Headline News Comcast Cable at 5:54 and 6:24 PM.

In addition to their recent forays into real-time search, Google is also making a bigger deal out of it’s local functionality. Now, you can refine search results with a “Nearby” button, which will filter your results that cater to your location. So if you do a Google search for Italian restaurants, you can click the “Show Options” button to access a “nearby” filter to see results for Italian restaurants in the city/area you live in. You’ll also be given local business results as well.

It should be noted that this function has existed for some time as part of their maps application; we will probably see more and more cross-pollination (Google Buzz + Gmail, anyone?) between products in the near future.

Google says that it will shows you Nearby results according to your IP address or your preferred location, if you customized your location in search settings.

From the official Goggle blog: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/refine-your-searches-by-location.html

According to recent industry reports from both eMarketer and The Kelsey Group, search will see substantial increase in mobile ad share over the next 3 years. Traffic Engine, as a leading provider of search technology and infrastructure, is positioned to benefit from this shift.

Search as the dominant mobile ad vehicle
With a compound annual growth rate of 58.6% from 2008 to 2013, search as a mobile ad delivery system is growing by leaps and bounds. eMarketer predicts a market share increase from 18% to a whopping 37% in 2013. This works out to 577.2M, up from just 57.6 in 2008. Much of this growth is attributed to Traffic Engine and others making available an increasingly sophisticated array of tools and platforms, along with more capable handsets.

The decline of SMS
The increase of search share will largely come at the expense of SMS, according to eMarketer. Currently, SMS ad share hovers around 60%, at a 2008 volume of 192M. As smartphones (and “smarter” phones, who offer additional functionality but not necessarily apps like the iPhone and Blackberry) become increasingly ubiquitous, the reliance on SMS as a delivery platform will decrease.

Display also on the rise
Display is expected to grow as well, from 22% in 2008 to 35% in 2013. This is very strong growth from 70.4M (2008) to an expected 546M in revenues.

A final take away is the slingshot-growth of the mobile industry as a whole. With the exception of archaic SMS, all mobile ad platforms are rising as the sector sees amazing growth. The 2008 total segment level of 320M is projected grow to 1.56B by eMarketer.
